! feelin' the funk - a ninjatune special !

hello. to round the current groove off in fine style i have sorted out a full and frank interview with grand mal main man - bill whitten. go have a read, tis well worth it. but today my head was spun around by the arrival of some excellent new stuff. and all from the same place. ninjatune yes. after a slightly dry period when it comes to beats and suchlike comes a sudden influx of supremeness. firstly there is the debut from treva whateva, music's made of memories - it's a fun sample overload album and contains a few solid classics, review tba. but will appeal to fans of BRA thats for sure. nest up is the cd/dvd combo package - 'keepintime' - where those of us uk-side get to see and hear what all the fuss is about. if you have checked out the recent DJ Shadow dvds then there is a snippet from this multiple legendary collaboration on there. combining some classic old school jazz drummers (earl palmer! roy porter! paul humphrey! james gadson!) with some top of the range dj masters. all this becomes clear on the dvd. and very special it is too. packed with all sorts of late night+red wine extras .. you will feel this one for a long long time : site but for those who lke to get a little deeper into the heavier uptempo beat, there is on the way a new solo album by 'part 2', coming out on the hip hop side to ninjatune, big dada. stepping out from behind the mask of his new flesh productions, part 2, aka keith hopewell, has sorted out a strong guestlist and managed to make an upfront urban album that is totally fresh/modern and yet doesn't alienate those of us who dont listen to the pirates of london. totally wonderful. and finally (i should get paid for this..) comes the pest full lengther. while the recent single was ok, nothing prepared me for the range of the complete album. it's all over the place in style, but never getting too excessively quirky. mean and tight, and one that is going to give me many hours of pleasure thats for sure. at last - the groove of 2005 has picked up, and i feel fine. crack'on mark e ireallylovemusic

grand mal - exclusive mp3s

hello. if anyone does pay attention to this stuff i write in various places then you may have noticed that i have a thing for bill whitten's grand mal project. in fact, it's my unconditional love for all their glammed up excess that has me wonder if my critical acumen is out of sync with the rest of the world, as i seem to be on a solo mission in this respect, i may even worry about it for a few minutes every now and then, but, whenever the doubt begins, i drop maledictions in the machine and then not give 2 hoots anymore. the band rock like its 1973. yes, it may a mish mash combination of trex, david bowie, rolling stones, and suchlike, but i reckon that's a fine rock-n-roll heritage to plunder, especially when the songs are as solid, catchy, fun, and sleazy as these. so far the band have released 2 albums properly. maledictions (slash/london - 1998) was when i came on board, it's cool cover, interesting name, and uk version exclusive a death in vegas remix all peaked my interest when i saw the disc in the cutout bin. subsequently, i paid the measley £1 and within an hour of the purchase i knew i had a lifelong friend, in fact, i was so enthralled i went back bought the stock and mailed the album to several other friends. and then silence. until another trawl through the bins several years later, and i happened upon 'bad timing'. this had an arena rock recordings logo and little else. out of nowhere i had a new favourite album. 'bad timing' hit my playlist hard, the more natural, live band feel than the hard edged 'maledictions' was an obvious direction maybe, but the album oozed with quality songs and an old school rock-n-roll passion that perfectly sidestepped the modern world. i realised that, despite no-one else getting into bills way, i was well and truly becoming hooked. so much so, that i managed to track bill down, and hassle him for some new stuff, amazingly he obliged ! so now i have a set of wonderful back to basics demos which connected with ireallylovemusic far more than just about anything else in 2004. and so, all went quite, except it transpires that these demos helped bill draft up a newly recorded, unnamed album, made once again with long time co-hort dave fridmann on production duties, google that name and realise that i am not alone in hearing the excellence in these songs. so, without further ado, let's have a quick recap through the bands various phases, and see if anyone else like this stuff as much as I do : from maledictions : stay in bed - death in vegas remix : expecting the deathly duo to make a dark-n-heavy trip hop rock mixture they actually make the track seem even more lo-fi and raw than the original ! from bad timing : duty free : spin this 3 times and then try and strip the chorus from your head. unreleased demo : in the year of the pig : i mean how can anyone not hear the outright splendidness of this. have a few beers and settle down to this gorgeous piano-centric song and pretend you knew that this band were always at the top of your playlist. now. hassle your local record shop for copies of the albums, or get in touch with the band via their website. mark e ireallylovemusic

take a break

following my first hand witnessing of an admittedly minor road rage incident in my cozy little cotswold town on the way home last night, i have come to realise that us brits cant handle the sunshine ! damn people, this is such a rare thing this year - enjoy it and kick back. and so to the soundtrack of such climate change induced temporatures : treva whateva - music's made of memories - new on ninjatune soon. more funky, sample heavy dance floor grooves, been done before, but still mighty fine nonetheless. baikonour - for the lonely hearts of the cosmos - i mean really ? how on earth people dont all have this blasting out of the ikea sanctioned living rooms is beyond me - totally gorgeous instrumental melody driven noises. full review to appear online in the usual place soon. (out on melodic with the best album cover ever ?) junkboy - lost parade - self released second album, continuing their personal journey into post rock, ambient and generally laid back but emotionally distraught vibes. ego twisters party ruiners - seriously fucked up electronic noise from new and interesting french label - check the website for massive mp3's availability. and look orange vinyl ! but be warned - this is not stuff for your sunday afternoon gettogether that's for sure. very messy : egotwister architecture in helsinki - new album out soon on moshi moshi. first play went straight past me. but then something clicked. could become a major playlister. prog-indie orchestral pop music thats anything but cinematic. other honourable mentions : clor album (of course !), lazarus and the return of wrath super sevens till next time, crack'on mark e ireallylovemusic
